When you think about engagement photography sessions in winter, you typically think of a little rain, some pretty umbrellas and if you’re lucky, a little sunshine. For Ben and Juanita’s engagement session we had all the wild weather in one day. (Cue song stuck in my head for the remainder of the day; ‘Four Seasons In One Day‘, thanks Crowded House!)
The engagement session was held at Ben’s family property in Tarlee, a special place for both Ben & Juanita. I love it when couples choose places with which they have an affinity. Due to the logistics, we had all only been able to plan the session for a specific day, and were all watching the weather throughout the week with keen interest. From the weather report it looked like a bit of patchy rain, sunny with intermittent cloud – sounds OK right?
On my drive it started with a little drizzle and then went to torrential sleeting rain – I couldn’t see the highway at all! Luckily when I finally arrived in Tarlee, through what seemed like a weather apocalypse, the weather was perfect. Ben’s family farm is stunning, set up into the hillside with amazing views of the landscape. The landscape was so shiny after the fresh rain, the clouds had parted and the sunshine was glorious. Unfortunately, that lasted all of 20 minutes, it turns out that the weather I drove through was following us!
After waiting it out for a little while, until we got a clearish patch, we figured we would make it work. We started our adventure near beautiful rolling mists that peaked over the hillsides – an epic backdrop. We even had a little intermittent sun! Ben and Juanita both had an awesome attitude, and laughed throughout – arranging each other against the winds that were slowly picking up speed.
We were assisted by Juanita’s mum and maid of Honour; Dee and Tamara – who were both amazing! Dee and Tamara helped by holding things, arranging, and manoeuvring Ben & Juanita’s beloved pooch (an important part of the session ♡). Dee even performed some quality off-roading to get us to the top of one of the hills, a place that Ben & Juanita loved, and had spent some happy time camping. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the hilltop we realised that the wind was almost gale force. Despite this, the couple were happy to give it a go and we worked with the wind to get some breath taking moments – Juanita’s hair was absolutely magical!! ♡
We almost got a photo in at our final destination, but then hail hit!! Despite the weather challenges, this session was an absolute blast and the couple’s beautiful connection shone throughout. In retrospect I think the crazy weather made it all the more memorable, and just goes to show that true love can weather any storm! I can’t wait for the wedding. 😀
